Emma was brilliant throughout this film but IMO this is the scene that won her her first Oscar. This scene really encapsulates so much of what La La Land is about, and it's crazy how Emma portrayed that using only her voice and facial expression. The entire scene is literally just her with no background and no movement, and she turned that into one of the most emotional scenes ever. All in one take too. I'm not sure I've seen an actor/actress do anything like it before or since. Man this movie is brilliant

Notice she doesn’t ask him for his name after he asks for hers. And we never hear her call him by name aloud onscreen.

How many years had it been? I still remember the time this movie was released. All my classmates went crazy. 😁

This is exactly what a dream seems like. Everything can change, everytime, everywhere, but feels normal and not ruining the storyline. Everything is make sense even in the most random plot.

The story is fundamentally primal, a mother fighting to save her daughter. However, it plays out over the span of a multiverse which effectively makes them Gods.

Sesame, poppy seed, salt, and it collapsed in on itself. Cuz you see when you really put EVERYTHING on a bagel, it becomes this. The truth. What is the truth? Nothing.... Matters. No joy you dont believe that. Feels nice doesn't it? If nothing matters then all the pain and guilt you feel from making nothing of your life.... goes away......................... Sucked. Into.... A bagel

Before watching this movie I had no idea "sucked into a bagel" could be such a chilling line.

rhis was where the movie went from good to great (and later great to amazing) for me. i appreciate movies that try to be creative, and seeing evelyn use whatever she had to work with during universe jumps, instead of a pure martial arts fight was awesome

Does Deirdre even have the authority to tell an officer to let Evelyn go? I mean, apart from the taxes stuff Evelyn could still be detained for, like, disorderly conduct or something.

This was a totally cool scene until they ended it abruptly. I wanted to hear more of what she had to say

This scene scares me because I believe we are all gods or a part of "God" that split into fragments, experiencing many things including human lives (so we don't die really). God basically had a nervous breakdown from the insanity that it was all alone forever and nothing else but it exist. And it is what created the big bang or what have you and created existence itself. Eventually as we ascend in conscious move away from being human beings and experience everything, we return and remember we are him/her/it and see that we are all alone again. In this scene it is implied that the two ladies are talking to themselves because the dialogue speaks as though they are the same person/being as indicated by the color of the subtitles. The bagel, is gods only salvation that I fear is fruitless, and it desires death because who wants to exist knowing they are truly alone and haved experienced everything in existence or knows everything that is. I'm scared tbh, I almost had a nervous breakdown thinking down this path.

This scene is absolutely masterful. It captures everything in this batshit crazy film. The absurdity and the heartfelt tenderness at once. Takes real craftmanship to balance those two disparate elements well.

Call me crazy but as much as I enjoy this movie if my mom spoke to me like this I wouldn't want to be around her. I'd need a lot more time to heal.

i don’t know how a movie that has a scene with a half-naked man jumping ass-first onto a buttplug ended up being one of the most emotional and beautiful movies i’ve ever seen but this pulled it off

This is a movie I want to share with everyone and also no one…. I watched it with my best friend when I first watched it, not knowing what to expect… I felt so uncomfortable in certain scenes, not wanting him to notice me crying but afterwards he said that those scenes with the daughter reminded him of me and idk how to process that…

My sister watched this for the first time. She had to take a moment after the movie ended to soak it all in. The title of the movie is so perfect, it shows sadness and anger and humor and pain and bliss and happiness and, just, everything everywhere all at once. And it's still comprehendible enough to be beautiful. This may be my favorite movie of all time now after watching it twice.

This scene hit me so hard the first time I saw it. Most people look at love and falling in love as a young couples game. The truth is you fall in love several times with someone. In some cases it’s after years of being together and just going through the motions due to a busy work life like these two. Sometimes when a crisis hits and it’s so easy to walk away, you have a glimpse of your life together and it opens your eyes again and it’s like the very first time you met all over again. Seeing them for the first time in years without all the noise and really opening up to them is a powerful moment. This scene captured that feeling so perfectly.

If you put everything on a bagel, you’d be back where you’d started. The universe is just on a tiny little bagel now. That or you just made a REALLY big bagel. I wonder if you go down, you’d find the original bagel. I wonder if it’d be moldy.
